In September 2015, the General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda which included 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). It is a collection of 17 global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all".

Although, the word “disability” is not cited directly in all goals, the goals are indeed relevant to ensure the inclusion and development of persons with disabilities. The newly implemented agenda (Envision 2030) for the SDG holds a deep promise for persons with disabilities everywhere.

#Envision2030 will work to promote the mainstreaming of disability and the implementation of the SDGs throughout its 15-year lifespan with objectives to:

  • Raise awareness of the 2030 Agenda and the achievement of the SDGs for persons with disabilities;

  • Promote an active dialogue among stakeholders on the SDGs with a view to create a better world for persons with disabilities; and

  • Establish an ongoing live web resource on each SDG and disability.

Research facts :

There are 1 billion people with disabilities worldwide.

1 in 5 of the worlds poorest have disabilities.

Disability can be regarded as both a cause and consequence of poverty.

80% of persons with disabilities live in developing countries.

Indigenous people and local communities customarily claim at least 50% of the world’s land, but legally own just 10%.

“Poverty does not equate with stupidity. [Indegenous and local communities] have their own technology, their own knowledge and their own systems. Not only do they contribute solutions, but they are the beneficiaries too. These are the people who can protect and save our planet.”

– Vu Thi Hein : previously held a prominent teaching role at the Hanoi University of Agriculture, but lefet it to apply her skills on the ground and help preserve Vietnam’s biodiversity, its ravaged natural forests and the indigenous communities that live nearby.
