Born in the Turkish parts of Cyprus, he breaks down the barriers between art, architecture and fashion design. His themes for fashion were considered atypical. They encompass nature, culture and technology. Specifically cultural identity, nation states, migration and nomadism.


Afterwords (autumn/winter 2000)

The first picture shows chairs who's cover an be taken off and worn as dresses. The chair itself can then be folded into a suitcase and taken away. The second picture is of a table that can be word as a skirt.


Chalayan first established his reputation at this show.

This collections focused on blurring the boundaries between the traditional function of clothes and furniture, which he presents as “wearable architecture” – items that you can take with you when you have to flee in times of war.

I like how he incorporates fashion and product into one garment. They are aesthetically interesting and a good conversation start about your belongings in a society of over consumers.
