I spoke to Philippe, a close friend and chef about my ideas and how I was struggling to put my product together. The data was really important to me but I couldn't seem to incorporate it into a useful product. I recorded the conversation and wrote down the main interesting points we discussed.

I've heard of these things where you pay to neutralise your C02 emissions. Drive your car, but only if you have what if takes to “cancel” it out.

Makes you feel like you are making a difference, by paying.

You are personally doing something.

Even if you are not directly ameliorating, you are not deteriorating the C02 in the atmosphere.

Seeing this information [the live data] is discouraging to me. It doesn’t push me to want to make a difference. It’s informative and morally destructive.

I can’t personally relate to these massive numbers. I’d want to see myself in there. I want to see what I did and exactly what difference it has made in statistics. The worst feeing is getting this information and feeling guilty, but also completely hopeless/ I don’t know what I can do about those statistics, so I want to see this data, but it must be accompanied by actions or information on how I can make a difference. Its about giving this information and telling that person who sees it to try and do better today. Help us and help this situation by doing “this”. For example, data about ;

WATER - how long you spend in your shower, how much water you waste. So the goal might be Today, have a short 3 minute shower. This will use up XL of water compared to an average 10 min shower which uses YL of water. If you do this once a week for one year, you save ZL of water.

C02 - pollution in the air. Goal Today is to not use your car, cycle or walk instead. If you live Xkm away from work and you cycle instead, this will save Yg of C02 emissions, or the equivalent to heating a kettle or something

Can you connect something to your gas and electricity counter that lights up when you have reached a certain goal? Or when you have not gone over a target per day, you get a notification on your phone?

The 3 different data sets is interesting if you have something to compare it to, so the numbers now/today, the numbers last year, and what it should be. These accompanied with a goal of how to make this better would be much better in my opinion. So you feel like you have to make a difference, you feel the responsibility. You feel guilty and responsible if you don’t do the small action.

These goals would need to be quite personal and tailored. How can we manage this?

World population : 7.8 billion people

VS

Population that is able to help : 18 - 60 year olds?

VS

C02 in the atmosphere :

Therefore, how much C02 does each individual need to reduce per year so that by 2050 we have the global target of + 1.5 degrees Celsius?

And what does this equate to in daily tasks?

The statistics above were taken from these websites :
